De Australische schrijver Richard Flanagan ontving de Booker Prize 2014 voor zijn roman De smalle weg naar het verre noorden. In deze roman beschrijft Flanagan op niet-chronologische wijze het levensverhaal van een Australische legerarts die in WOII als krijgsgevangene te werk wordt gesteld aan de Birmaspoorlijn.

De jury zei over het winnende boek: “The two great themes from the origin of literature are love and war: this is a magnificent novel of love and war.
